Research Interests

• Herbal medicine components and mechanisms of action
• Bax downstream of the topo/p53 mechanism of most cancer drugs. Create homology model based on recently crystallized Bcl and explore what possible compounds might interact to increase its apoptotic effect.
• phase II inducers inhibit carcinogenesis. Exploring the optimal variety of inducers will help prevention

  Teaching Philosophy

  I have always enjoyed simplifying complex scientific concepts into language accessible to whomever I am communicating with. I suppose it began when I was a teenager with a sister 12 years younger than I. Later, my book on natural dental care reflected both my ability to self learn new medical topics as well to as digest it into easy layman's language. My teaching opportunity was limited by departments that believed in full professors leading the classes but I was always one to bring together study groups and I enjoyed tutoring to help others.
  

  Use a continuous cycle of objective and assessment. Inspire participation and invoke student responsibility and desire by interactively involving them in the learning process. Emotional engagement (humor, mystery) to personalize the concepts. Highlight the important principles and clear up confusions in ways that relate to the questioner with analogies, flow diagrams, etc. Multiple modes including regular problem sets & quizes, group projects & class presentations, demonstrations. Tutorial sessions and computer aided instruction to bring up those with weak backgrounds. Feedback via teacher evaluation.
